Strengthening the Teaching Profession

The University of Birmingham and the Durham University Evidence Centre for Education will hold a one-day event on Friday 14 November 2025 where educators, teachers and academics come together to discuss the big question:

How can we strengthen the teaching profession and enhance teaching for the future?

This is a face-to-face event with some participants joining us online. The event is free and open to schools and colleagues from other universities. There will be a free lunch and refreshments throughout the day.

We will present a summary of key findings and implications from our ESRC-funded projects on the factors shaping teacher supply from a comparative analysis of international education systems (ES/W003074/1) and investigating the recruitment and retention of ethnic minority teachers (ES/X00208X/1).

Great teaching starts with great teachers. This event explores how we can raise the status of teaching, diversify the workforce, and embed research-informed practice to strengthen the profession. Join us to learn from international examples, share ideas, and discuss how we can support teachers to thrive in every classroom.

This event will present these challenges and opportunities, offering space for discussion, debate, and practical insights on how we can support teachers—and future teachers—to thrive in their classrooms.

Following the presentations there will be a Question Time style discussion led by the audience questions. Registrants for the event will be asked to send questions before the day, but attendees are also invited to submit questions on the day.
